Breaking All the Rules

I made some good progress on my St. Patrick's Day Socks yesterday. I'm past the heel flap, heel turn, and the Great Time Sucking Vortex of Socks - I mean the gusset, and now its just a straight shot to the toe. I can't wait to see what these look like blocked - right now the lace and ribs are pulling into themselves so much the sock doesn't look like much. Something new I've learned: You can use 33 stitches for a heel flap, still only work 32 rows and get a recognizable heel without The Sock Knitting Committee (Board of Don't Mess With the Traditional Techniques) breaking down the door. Of course, they could be busy with the two-socks-at-once-on-two-circular-needles people too. The design repeat wouldn't break down into 32 stitches with both sides even, so I would have had to make the second sock a mirror image. Knowing myself and knowing I'd never be able to remember that - even with copious notes on the subject - I chose to make the heel 33 stitches and the top of the foot (instep?) 31 stitches. Now the design is centered over the top of the foot and the socks will be identical and I don't have to think too much to get the second one done. All is well at the Pink Lemon Twist...

OK, well, you are amazing. I can't wait to see these ON YOUR FEET. The color is awesome too.

I wish that I could transport myself into your living room to sit beside you and just...watch. You are a sock machine. (Meant in the best possible way, of course!)

Sock on, sister!

Ooh, I love this sock pattern. Lovely cable. I read your previous post about picking out the pattern... Good old Barbara Walker. Hey, I have that book. :-D I may have to copy you and knit this pattern into some socks. I think I'll skip the leprechaun green, however. ;-)

Oh yeah. Why are gussets such a bear? It's not like they're difficult to do. I dunno. It's a mystery. But they *are* a bear, aren't they?

Good for you! I'm a rebel, I guess, but I don't always follow recipes (well, hardly ever!) and if you need to fudge the pattern a little this way or that, then you should. My patterns don't always work out evenly, and no one ever knows! As long as they look good, who really cares?!!
Gussets? A bear? why? I find them rather fun to do, and what an ingenious design! Well, okay, that's just me.

I started a new pair of socks last night and noticed the Cloverleaf eyelet in the book. I didn't use it, but now I really have to go get some green sock yarn for St. Patrick's Day. Hopefully, I can match the sweater I finally finished a few days after St. Patrick's Day last year.

Go for it,I am always fudging a little, and I only get caught out if I leave it too long to complete second one and I FORGET what changes I did with first,....maybe thats why I seem to be good at reading sts and working out what I did first time around..........
