Taking time for Solace
I've been working on Solace more and since the weather cooled off yesterday and it's been raining off and on since yesterday morning, it's a very welcome project to spread over my lap. I'm almost 2/3 of the way through with it (I know that because I bought 12 balls of yarn for it and I'm almost through ball number 8 - sometimes knitting is obvious that way) and it's big enough to keep me warm while I knit on it. As long as the weather stays cool, that will be a good thing.
By the way, I've been trying to help Finn work through some dog behavior issues lately and I've been reading Cesar Millan's books. If you have a dog, I really recommend that you read these. I didn't really grow up with a dog and honestly I have no idea what's going on in his head (especially compared to the way I can read Ramius - I did grow up with cats), and I think that's a big part of what's going on, but I feel like I'm starting to understand him better thanks to these books. I've still got a long way to go, but at least we've started the journey. (Wow, I do sound a bit like a fortune cookie today, don't I?)

The Solace looks great, and I love the color! I'm sure that it will be appreciated as it gets cooler (finally) here!
Having a puppy / dog sometimes is difficult - even nearly perfect dogs act up sometimes and you have to know what's in their heads to understand how to make them behave better.
Glad you are "back" - I just hope you won't have to give up your mystery shaw - Joy's is so lovely that I'm looking forward to her doing another one next year (and maybe I'll get one someday from her!) ...

I want to recommend Cesar Millan's Dog Whisperer programs to you. I watched the first season on DVD from my local library and learned a lot - and I've had dogs for years. I've been struggling with my Australian Shepherd who is willful and headstrong and who bullies my Border Collie - Millan's examples of calm assertive posture and behavior (human) helped me and I'm happier and so are my dogs. Good luck - and keep knitting!
Melanie, I am so relieved to find out you are human after all. I just discovered all the knitting blogs this summer (yours was the first) and I keep telling my husband that you can't be real. No young mother and wife can do all the talented and creative things you do in your knitting and spinning and mothering and still write a blog every day. I was feeling very inadequate in the fiber world because I (like many others) balance a very busy life and although knitting and fiber are very important and fulfilling to me, they often have to take a back seat to life's obligations--and opportunities.
I greatly admire your ability to blog about your days in such an interesting and humorous way. You have inspired me in many ways--as well as having opened the door for me to the cyber world of knitting blogs. (I can't believe how I've sucked in!)

I love the way your Solace looks. Mine is looser and the side panels aren't as well defined. Makes me want to get home to my needles. I'm finishing some "second socks" before I get back to my shawl knitting.
Even though Finn looks like an adult, he's still a puppy inside. My retrievers (not Goldens) don't seem to grow up until they're 2 or so. You can't go wrong with Cesar Millan's theory or program. Finn will thank you.
Your Solace looks so wonderful as a throw, I might have to put that into the line-up. Glad to know you are back, thank you for continuing to blog when you are able.
Re: Dog training : the books by Stanley Coren - ("How dogs think" and "How to speak dog" ) are excellent and approachable. Suggest plenty of exercise, then some more for good luck

I should read that book. My little gals are so naughty sometimes! They love to bark at visitors. They are not mad, they think it is funny and it drives me crazy! I need all the help I can get!

It seems strange to me that seasons effect knitting behavior. Here, in sub-tropical Louisiana, seasons come and go, but the A/C is constant. We just knit on.
Oh, and my Siamese say "who knows what a dawg is thinking. Do they think?" Play nice, Meezers!
I really like Solace in the green, it's looking great! Ijust finished my 9th pattern repeat on Mom's Solace so I'm seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. I've never read any of Cesar Milan's books, but I've watched his TV show a lot. I've even tried some of the things he recommends and they work! Hang in there with Finn, I'm sure you'll get the issues worked out.

I have a good dog (Attie) and a bad dog (Wallace). As far as I can figure out, the difference is that Attie used to be a person, so there's something going on in that lovely Golden Retriever head. Wallace, however, is on his way up the reincarnation ladder, which explains the blank look behind his beady Sheltie eyes. I love them both to pieces.
