A New Craft!

Yes, you read that right! We've got a new craft over here at Pink Lemon Twist - Plastic Canvas Lids! This one is stitched together with two strands of Lorna's Laces Shepherd Sock in Icehouse. OK, before you all run for the door and trample someone, I'll explain. This lid is actually for this little guy:
His name is Balto (yes, he's named after this Balto - Caleb is doing a section on Alaska in school right now.) It's probably ironic that we have a dog named Finn and a fish named after a dog, but I try not to think about that too much. We got Balto over the weekend and as soon as Ramius saw the bowl (it's sitting in the middle of the kitchen table), he thought it was a new water bowl for him - with one of the new flavored waters in it! (Fish flavored of course.) I honestly don't think the cat has even noticed that Balto is in there, but clearly we needed a lid to keep the cat from drinking Balto's water. Fortunately, I had some plastic canvas sitting around because I used it between the wire shelves in my closet and the sweaters I stack on them. (The wire leaves lines in the sweaters and the plastic canvas prevents this, but doesn't block the air flow either - it's low tech, but it works.) This will probably be the only time you see Balto - I don't forsee a career as a knitwear model for him, and with the way fish don't have high survivability ratings, I don't want you all getting attached to him.

A friend of mine just got a fish and her two-year-old son named him "Go". the kid had no idea of the irony of the name, but it is hilarious.

Balto is a beautiful color! Don't YOU get too attached! My sister got one of those beautiful fishes and my brother-in-law was very unhappy when he finally died of old age!!

Oh don't worry about Balto. I had one for more than three years. He was yellow named Sushi. He could be around for a long time (in kid years).

Names are great! My daughter had a cat named Bird and has a fish named Rover. I'm getting a golden retriever puppy in April and considering calling her Kitty. We already have two cats that the "middle" names are Bunny and Bear. The idea for using the plastic canvas on wire shelves is genius. Thanks for the tip.

My neice had one of those, and it stayed around for ever! Balto is so beautiful... the colors! I could see a lovely beaded lace shawl inspired by it.... nudge, nudge...

Clever uses of plastic canvas! And the yarn coordinates with Balto so nicely! I'll have to try the plastic canvas trick on my closet's wire shelves. Thanks!

I think Balto deserves a little itty bitty "Sea Silk" scarf.

(You know that you want to...)

By the time our dog found my sister's goldfish on the floor, Hymie (the fish) was pretty much dehydrated, so the dog just left him there. Forty years later, we are still mystified as to how Hymie got out of the fishbowl in the first place. If he had had a nice bowl cover, maybe he'd still be with us...

To Ria: These fish are called Betta or Fighting Fish , Betta Splendens in latin, they are easy to keep but don't put two male fish in the same tank, they will kill each other.

Lovely fish by the way;)

We got one FOUR years ago and he is still doing fine in just a plain ol fish bowl and Walmart beta food. Sadly, he doesn't like knit wear much. Love yer idea, our dog has sampled that new flavored water at times too!
